“Look at the birds.” Matthew 6:26
The Bible is filled with stories about birds.
After being baptized, the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus like a DOVE. (Matthew 3:16, Mark 1:10, Luke 3:22, John 1:32) The prophet Isaiah said those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like EAGLES. (Isaiah 40:31) Jesus told Peter, before the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know me. (Matthew 26:75, Mark 14:30, Luke 22:34, John 13:38)
Yet, during his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus told his followers to look at the birds for one simple reason. To be reminded of God’s incredible love for us.
You see, the birds neither plant nor harvest (that’s somebody else’s job) yet our Heavenly Father feeds them anyway. In short, God provides. So, don’t worry!
If God feeds the birds, he will also certainly feed you!
Two sparrows are only worth one copper coin, and yet not even a single sparrow falls to the ground without God knowing. The very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows! Luke 12:7
So, don’t worry!
Jesus reminded his followers, don’t worry about what you will eat or drink, or what you will wear. God will provide, just as he provides for the birds.
So, the next time you look out your window and see a bird, remember God wants you to trust him.
Don’t worry. He will always provide!
Just look at the birds.
Questions for reflection:
- Is there anything you are worried about today?
- Tell God what you need and thank him for all he has done!
- Then, look at the birds!
