I’ve told the story before of how I came into my current role. I was teaching high school math at the time my former wife passed. I was given a unique opportunity to step away from a job that wasn’t what I had anticipated. I took some time off to think about the future and pray about where I might go next. When the missions director opportunity at Hope was presented, I was initially apprehensive because I didn’t think I was qualified.

Better together is a phrase we all know. If anyone was able to go it alone, it would be Jesus. But instead, he chose 12 individuals to walk alongside during his time on earth. These 12 were far from perfect, including the one who would eventually betray him.

Despite this knowledge, Jesus chose these 12, and this demonstrates several important ideas:

  1. We can’t do life alone. We are better when we have people around us to rely on, share the burden, and hold each other accountable.
  2. People will let us down. Jesus knew he would be betrayed, but chose Judas anyway. When the inevitable happens, it is yet another opportunity to learn and practice or ask for forgiveness.
  3. Jesus can use anyone to build his kingdom. I feel underqualified as missions director, but I know that God is always with me, and I am surrounded by good people who provide wisdom and advice.

Finally, the 12 disciples demonstrate the idea that Jesus isn’t looking for perfection. We know that perfection is impossible to achieve. Rather, he is looking for commitment. The disciples were committed to Jesus and his message.

Reflection:

  • Jesus knew that people would let him down. At the same time, relationships are essential. Who do you need to forgive, and who do you need to ask for forgiveness?
  • What is your level of commitment? Who or what has the most influence over your day-to-day decisions? What steps do you need to take to make Jesus the priority?
