Do you ever find it hard to read Proverbs? It’s not usually a place I choose to turn to when picking up my Bible. But, in writing this devo, I was reminded how quick, relevant, and life-giving Godly wisdom is!
As we begin in Proverbs 24, the writer reminds us that Godly wisdom is foundational. Solomon, our author, writes, “The wise are mightier than the strong, and those with knowledge grow stronger and stronger.” (Proverbs 24:5) Godly wisdom is better than any worldly strength. And knowledge can continue to grow! I remember someone telling me that knowledge is something that can never be taken away from us. Being rooted in Godly wisdom and knowledge is something that will build for us a firm foundation — one that cannot be shaken by the circumstances of this world. (Keep reading for a wisdom nugget on this a few verses later!) Build your house on solid rock! (Matthew 7:24-27)
As we continue reading, Proverbs reminds us that who we surround ourselves with matters, calling out fools, laziness, quarrelsome folks, and the list goes on. Research shows that we become like the five people we spend the most time with. That might be great news to you today or you might be thinking “Yikes! I need some new company.” Surround yourself with people who will challenge you, build you up, and help point you to Jesus! Stand on the solid rock with trustworthy, life-giving, Jesus-filled people around you.
Questions for reflection:
- What does it mean to have Godly wisdom? How can you grow in this?
- Think about the five people you spend the most time with. (Your kids don’t count!) Research shows these people have the biggest impact on our lives. Are these people you want speaking into your life? How can you lean into, change, or grow your community?
- You might be one of someone else’s “five people.” Are you a friend/coworker/coach/etc. who points people to Jesus?
