When you hear the word unity, what does that make you think of? Lutheran Church of Hope launched its 10 for 10 goals on Nov. 2, 2019. This details 10 goals for Hope in the next 10 years. One of these goals is to be Unity Agents. What does being a unity agent look like to you personally? It is important to decide what unity means to us before we attempt to achieve it. Sometimes we get confused and believe unity means everyone agrees with what “I” have to say or how “I” think about the world.

Unity in God’s Kingdom is wider and deeper than that. We are united in Christ and who he is, which is our basis for everything we do and everything we believe in. We learn from David in these Psalms just how amazing God’s people are who are living in unity and what it can look like.

When we read Psalm 133, David writes, “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!”

What David is saying in this verse is that unity among God’s people is good because it reflects God’s heart and the purpose of unity among his people. It is pleasant because it makes life together as God’s people so much more enjoyable rather than seasons of conflict and tension. Unity among God’s people is remarkable because it is good and pleasant. How many things on this earth can be both good and pleasant at the same time? How can we be unity agents as God’s people today?

Questions for reflection:

  1. How can we be unity agents in our own social circles?
  2. Think about a time in your life when you had a disagreement with someone. How did it make you feel? Did it get resolved?
  3. Why is it important for the body of Christ to be united? What does unity in the Kingdom of God look like to you?
