Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words. They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are.”
Matthew 22:15-16
In today’s world, we have so many variations of the truth that it can be hard to find what is true and what isn’t. You will hear a consensus of people encouraging others to live in their truth, or statements such as “I’m walking in my truth.”
Though never meant to harm, the tricky part about these statements is that they can lead others astray. Someone else’s truth also has the potential to change what you believe, what you know to be true. I think the enemy wants it that way. Why? Well, his plan is simple: Can I twist the truth just enough where you will question what is true?
Matthew 4:5-6 reads: Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: ‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’”
Talk about intriguing! Satan is using Scripture on Jesus—the Son of Man—the one who is Scripture and truth. Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
Matthew 4:8-11 goes on to say: Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’” Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.
Satan used God’s word with a twist in an attempt to sway Jesus to fall for a false truth. So you may be asking, Well what is the truth? How do I know if I am walking in the truth?God’s word is always true and never changing, and contrary to what the world says, it is relevant today. If you are questioning whether something is true, test it with his word and learn to walk in it so you won’t be swayed.
Reflection:
- Do you have a hard time knowing what is true?
- How can you stand firm in God’s truth and not allow the world to sway you?
