“Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom” (Psalm 90:12).

As 2025 ends, and as you ponder the events of the year, what memories fill your mind? Joyful memories? Painful memories? Regrets? Hopes for the new year?

Realizing that life is short helps us use the little time we have more wisely and for eternal good.

Take time to number your days by asking: What do I want to see happen in my life before I die? What small step could I take toward that purpose today? Who are the people I want to see in heaven someday who maybe don’t know Jesus?

Maybe there are habits you would like to give up. Addictions, grumbling or complaining, people pleasing, social media scrolling, comparing yourself to others?

Are there positive qualities you would like to develop? Practicing gratitude, having a daily quiet time with God, being more Christ-like, showing more appreciation, kindness, or generosity?

We gain wisdom from reading God’s word, spending time with him, and being in his presence.

Prayer:

God, please teach us to realize the brevity of life so that we may grow in wisdom and make our days count for your eternal good purposes. Thank you for endings and new beginnings and a fresh start with you every day. We pray for your transformational power in our lives; your promises to comfort, strengthen, and reassure us; your presence to surround us; and for the peace that only you, Jesus, can give. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
