In our reading, we find Jesus talking to his disciples about what is to come, preparing them for what is about to happen. Jesus is telling his disciples—his friends—he is about to leave, and where he is going, they cannot follow, but he is leaving them with one final job …
“Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other” (John 13:34).
Love.
Four simple letters that come together to make the most powerful word.
Love.
Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection are love on display, and it is right before this love is put on display that he calls his disciples (and you and me) to join in this mission of love.
“Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples” (John 13:35).
Through your love, people will come to know Jesus. Are you living with your love on display?
Life can be hard, people can be messy, and sometimes loving can be really hard. Thankfully, we aren’t left to do this on our own.
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth” (John 14:16-17).
Jesus is leaving and giving us this final commandment, but he isn’t leaving us to do it on our own (because we can’t!). Jesus is leaving us with the Holy Spirit, and this Spirit lives inside of you and me. It is through this Spirit that we can live in the love God has called us to. You don’t have to do this on your own!
Jesus is love on display for you, me, and all people.
Are you living with your love on display?
Reflection:
- How has Jesus’ love for you changed the way you live and love?
- How can your love change the lives of those around you?
