Friday, March 31 – Luke 21:5-24
On October 17, 1989, at 5:04 pm, I thought the world was ending. I had just walked in the door from school, had prepared myself a little snack, and turned on the television for game one of the Battle of Bay World Series between the Oakland A’s and San Francisco Giants.
As I settled down on the floor with tortilla chips and Tabasco sauce (weird I know) the ground began to roll, and I listened to the broadcasters share that we were having an earthquake as I dove under a large piece of furniture. For days we watched rescuers face incredible odds to free people from a stretch of road called the Embarcadero, where cars were flattened like pancakes. I remember being glued to the television watching humanity overcome incredible odds.
So, on February 6 when I learned of Turkey’s 7.8 earthquake, I had flashbacks of my own experience some 34 years later. The devastation and life lost both in Turkey and Syria have grown to 46,000 according to a March 7 Reuter report. Unfortunately, not more than a few hours later I heard someone share that the events were apocalyptic and that people should get their houses in order. In other words, the world is ending; you better prepare to meet your Maker.
From the sky is falling comments that seem to stack up with television evangelists after natural events, I find comfort in Jesus’ words. Jesus brings reassurance to his follower as he describes the breaking in of the new kingdom. Helping all of us who profess that Jesus will provide defense, comfort, and life in times of challenge and persecution. So, when things get chaotic or confusing our first steps should be our affirmation in God, knowing he is holy, and we are dependent on him for everything. In difficulty, persecution, and war, Jesus shares, “By your endurance, you will gain your lives” (Luke 21:19).
Such power and great encouragement for all who call on the name of the Lord. Jesus laid down his life so that you and I could have life. Today, what can you pray, do, or say that can help fight off the darkness around you or for someone else?
Pray with me…
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
