The main message of John chapter 7 is that Jesus, despite facing opposition and misunderstanding, continues to teach and reveal his divine nature and mission. This ultimately leads to both belief and division among the people, with some believing he is the Christ and others doubting due to his origins.

When Jesus travels to Jerusalem for the Feast of Tabernacles, his brothers discourage him, but he goes secretly to not attract attention to himself. Why? Because the religious leaders hate him, and many will reject his gift of salvation, no matter what he says or does. The more Jesus teaches and works publicly, the more these leaders will cause trouble for him and his followers. So, Jesus needs to teach and work as quietly as possible. Followers of Jesus today can expect to face the same opposition.

Today, we have every reason to believe because we have the full record of Jesus’ miracles, death, and resurrection. We also have evidence of what the Good News has done in people’s lives through the centuries. Don’t miss the opportunity to believe in God’s Son!

Jesus teaches openly in the temple, astonishing the Jews with his knowledge and authority. He declares that his authority comes from the one who sent him, further provoking questions and doubt, even from his brothers. Some of these brothers will eventually become leaders in the church and believe. But for several years, they are embarrassed by Jesus.

He proclaims himself as the source of “living water,” echoing his conversation with the woman at the well (John 4:10). Jesus uses the term living water in 4:10 to indicate eternal life. Here he uses the term to refer to the Holy Spirit. The two go together—wherever the Holy Spirit is accepted, he brings eternal life.
