I have two seniors in the house at the moment. My daughter is a senior in college and my son is a senior in high school. Graduation is a milestone for a number of reasons. According to the calendar, we have four or five months to prepare for the next phase in each of their lives. I think most of us would agree that one of the primary responsibilities of a parent is to teach kids how to fly so they are ready when they leave the nest.
Matthew 24:36 reads: “However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows.”
This verse points to the idea that we should always be working toward the goal of being ready for Jesus’ return because we don’t know when the time will come. I have known about and been slowly preparing for these two graduations for a long time (22 and 18 years), and yet I don’t know that my kids are adequately trained for what comes next. Only time will tell how prepared they are for their futures. Of course, I am still around and available to support them, just like I still go to my parents for advice from time to time.
We don’t know when Jesus will return, but we can make preparations as if it could happen anytime.
Reflection:
- What steps can you take today to prepare yourself for Jesus’ return?
- What have you been putting off thinking you still have time?
