This year, I find it very easy to be grateful. I became a grandmother to our first grandchild and could not be more thrilled (ask anyone who has had to endure seeing all the photos 😊). It is hard not to see God’s abundance when you look into the eyes of new life. It has taken some years to get here, however, and it is interesting how perspective can remind you of what a blessing you have right in front of you. It can take time to get through hardship and create distance from pain and wisdom enough to see what is important.
In today’s reading, we get a glimpse of David’s inner dialogue as he reflects on God’s goodness, grace, and mercy. This Psalm is one of praise as he looks back on what he has been through and what God has done. He is not just praising God for the gifts of today, but for all his years.
Something that really stands out to me as I read this Scripture is the season of life David is in when he wrote this. It’s refreshing for me to know that I am in good company with many, including David, who are unable to see in the midst of the challenges what God has been up to. It is in hindsight that perhaps we are able to connect the dots. The things that were abundantly clear to God may not reveal themselves to us until later in our lives. It also seems that as we get older, we are naturally more introspective and contemplative.
Like David, our lives can be hard, and in the moment, it can be impossible to find things to be grateful for. We hang on and push through and sometimes even question God’s presence in it all. Here are a few things to consider in those moments:
- Make yourself find one or two things to be grateful for every day—it actually changes your brain chemistry for the good!
- Lean on the people around you to remind you that God’s promises are true, even now—especially now.
- Finally, know and trust that when you get to the season where there’s distance, perspective, and wisdom, you will see the beautiful miracles God has performed in your life all along.
We owe all praise to God!
Reflection:
- What can you be grateful for today?
- When has perspective changed how you’ve seen God’s work in your life?
- Ask God to give you eyes to see in this season of your life.
