Joshua is the start of a new era. Moses has died and passed the torch to Joshua so he can carry out the mission to bring God’s people into the Promised Land. Joshua is tasked with leading God’s people, which means he needs to put his trust in what God has done and what God will continue to do through him. Joshua must trust in God wholeheartedly and have courage amidst the fear he may be experiencing as he is appointed to this leadership position.
Have you ever had a hard time trusting God in a season of your life? Maybe you call it a season or maybe you call it an era like Taylor Swift. The reality of something being called an era or season means that for an era to begin, another must end. We are seeing the close of the Moses era and the dawn of the Joshua era.
Sometimes it can be bittersweet when an era ends. When my husband and I first became parents, we realized that for the “parenting era” to begin, our “just us era” had to end. We have realized the blessings that can come when you step into unknown territory trusting that God has you covered. It has taken a lot of courage to move into a space where there are so many unknowns. It has also required me to have patience… both for my child and my husband! God continues to show us the blessing of being parents and in two days we will have a 1-year-old.
Through all the changes and unknowns I have clung to this verse above all else. No matter what era I find myself in, Jesus is consistent.
Jesus Christ is the same today, yesterday and always. (Hebrews 13:8)
Just as God was with Moses and Joshua, he is with you. Trust in him wholeheartedly and the plans he has for you. He is with you in this era and he will be with you for the rest.
…As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you. Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them. Joshua 1:5-6
Questions for reflection:
- What would you call the era of your life right now?
- What would you do if you were confident that God was with you?
