In Romans 12, Paul gives practical guidelines for living as redeemed people in a fallen world. Truly counter-cultural thinking!
“Give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you” (v. 1).
“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect” (v. 2). Pastor Amanda preached on this recently, answering the question: “How do I know God’s will for my life?”
“Don’t think you are better than you really are” (v. 3).
“We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other” (v. 5).
Then Paul lists several spiritual gifts God has given us for doing certain things well: the ability to prophesy, serve others, teach, encourage, give, lead, and show kindness gladly (vv. 6-8).
“Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good” (v. 9).
“Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other” (v. 10).
“Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically” (v. 11).
“Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying” (v. 12).
“When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality” (v. 13).
“Bless those who persecute you. Don’t curse them; pray that God will bless them” (v. 14).
“Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep” (v. 15).
“Live in harmony with each other. Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all!” (v. 16).
“Never pay back evil with more evil. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable” (v. 17).
“Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone” (v. 18).
“Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God” (v. 19).
“If your enemies are hungry, feed them. If they are thirsty, give them something to drink” (v. 20).
“Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good” (v. 21).
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, empower me with your Holy Spirit to renew, reeducate, and redirect my mind so I live a transformed life that is counter-cultural and according to your teachings. I offer my body and life as a living and holy sacrifice—the kind you will find acceptable because of all you have done for me. I can never be perfect, but help me to live as a redeemed child of God and to your glory. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Reflection:
- How can you apply these practical guidelines in your daily life (work, relationships, social media, church, etc.)?
- What spiritual gifts has God given you to serve others well and build up the church?
